An ecotarian is one who eats a diet based on the local environment or with the least impact on the environment. Ecotarians select food with consideration for all ecological factors, plus energy used to produce the food, with the goal of eating in a sustainable way.
However, being an ecotarian is not as easy as you think. Merely consuming the most local produce you can find will not always be the most energy efficient option. European Union bureaucracy often puts so many exacting conditions on food producers. For example, a carton of European fruit juice may have had more energy lavished on its production than a similar carton from South America.

Quite interesting. Takes commitment and discipline which most Standard American Dieters are unwilling to entertain. My husband's a vegetarian and sometimes THAT'S challenging. Thanks for sharing this information.
Sounds like alot of research. What if I'm in a rush and eat Sushi that was shipped from Japan.
Life is hard enough!
I was having no clue what the Ecotarian means before reading the article . But now I will take care before selecting my diet
Thanks
Where have you been???
We need a new post from you!!!
Come Back, please ;-)
Hum.... I wonder how much gas and time a ecotarian will spend trying to find something to eat made locally... it seems like a massive challenge. I wonder if ANYTHING is even grown within miles of most Americans?
No I'm not. I try to be green in some areas of my living; but life is sometimes too filled with stress to 2nd quess everything I eat. I think there are easier ways to make an improvement on green living. I work 4 miles from the house, so use my car far less than most folks, thats huge to me. Hubby works half that distance. We use energy efficient light bulbs, we don't run the a.c. but occassionally, we reduce how high we turn up the heat and put on a sweater instead. Things like that.
Good luck though if you're trying to do this.
Sandy
